ASTM carbon steel plates A514 grade B material is quenched and tempered alloy steel with high yield strength, which makes it ideal for structural, construction, heavy equipment, and transit projects.
A514 grade B steel makes a good combination of weldability and toughness at low atmospheric temperatures. Plate A514 grade B is not generally recommended for service at temperatures lower than -50 degrees Fahrenheit, or -46 degrees Celsius, since its toughness is not sufficient to prevent brittle fracture at lower temperatures. Material A514 grade B is also not recommended for service at temperatures higher than 800 degrees Fahrenheit, or 425 degrees Celsius, because fracture could result from low stress-rupture ductility at higher temperatures.
A514 grade B material is most commonly used as structural steel in cranes and large heavy-load machines, which often require lightweight steels that don’t sacrifice longevity or resilience.
